Yes Giantess - Siren

Released a few months ago, the debut album from Boston natives Yes Giantess went by largely unnoticed, which is a shame, considering the amount of shining anthems it includes. The reasons for this happening kinda miss me out, but the truth is that these four guys have a real love for all things from the 80's, which in here sounds a bit like an anachronism, considering that the irony usually associated with that decade's revivalism (see: the last 10 years in music) is largely absent in Siren.
Sincerity is indeed the best form of flattery, and Yes Giantess take this old-saying by their hearts. From vintage synths to fuzzy beats, there's a lot of 80's nostalgia to be heard on these 10 tracks. But they aren't happy just to copy a whole decade into their sound: this sincerity actually allows them to be more than just a pastiche homage, and the fact that Siren seems so genuine - and almost heart-breaking - is more than just a coincidence. It was actually this same genuinity and irony-free attitude that turned their remix of Miley's Party In The USA into such a brilliant moment, and it does wonders again in here.
The rest is pure pop-gold: hyper-catchy melodies, glossy call-for-love shouts and blasting hands-in-the-air numbers, in one of the best 80's albums that the 80's has missed to see... with the aforementioned sincerity actually taking it to a more timeless spot.
In the end, with all those larger-than-life love-declarations heard throughout, one last question arrives: are Yes Giantess the most romantic guys out there? Or are they actually just trying to seduce us? We'll never know, but the spell actually works too damm well. (8,5/10)

Out of my control

"Turning innocent"

Came across this while getting ready to go out and party (Carnival!) and it just couldn't fit any better my current mood. First music video from Yes Giantess, everyone! For an infectious electro-pop song produced by Starsmith! And it features some dudes masked as evil robots! It's an epic sci-fi romp! Inspired by Fritz Lang's Metropolis! And it even has crazy dance choreography! And basically, it's wicked fun and completely amazing in that cute indie-budget kind of way!

"Yeah! It’s a party in the USA!"

"Movin’ my hips like 'Yeah!'"

Always ones not to give a damm about conventional rules like commonly accepted good taste, there's only one thing that Yes Giantess seem to search for, which is to have fun and play with pop music boundaries, from its very own inside and with no limits whatsoever. And that is precisely what they have just done in here, crossing the line and making a "very unofficial remix" of Miley Cyrus' Party In The USA just because, in their own wise words, "it is the most important song ever written". They describe their approach as "euro-clubbing on Saturn" and, hearing what they've done - those epic hands-in-the-air synths! those larger-than-life beats! -, I couldn't agree more.

Erik Hassle + Yes Giantess = ♥

"So deep into this shit I can taste the earth"

When you join together two names that are single-handedly broadening even further my perception of how good pop music can be, the result can only be one: some next-level shit of atomic proportions. The emo wonders of Swedish heartthrob Erik Hassle immersed in the synth-tastic rainbows of Boston newcomers (and, in my book, already winners) Yes Giantess, is what this is all about. It's obvious that this track could only become something of hottest-thing-ever level and so it is: absurdly infectious and also a brand new definition for ecstatic perfection.

Yes Giantess - The Mixtape

I know that this one is already some months old, but the very warm weather made me go back to it, and damm, it really is a gold pop piece to soundtrack all summer-related things. One of the endless advantages of mixtapes is putting old songs together in a sequence that ends up revealing new aspects to them, like seeing a well-known work of art in a totally new light and, with that in mind, this mixtape by Yes Giantess is pretty flawless. Love the Kylie Minougue moment, for example, and that Mariah Carey oldie has probably never sounded so good. Bonus also to the fact that, with so many classics as company, their own songs shine as brightly. Here's the tracklist for some awes:

Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
Muscles - Sweaty (Shazam Remix)
Yes Giantess - You Were Young (Acapella)
Michael Jackson - P.Y.T.
Kylie Minogue - Boombox (JBAG Mix)
Kylie Minogue - Wow (Single Mix)
Prince - Little Red Corvette
Yes Giantess - Demons
Gui Boratto - Beautiful Life
Phoenix - Heat Wave
autoKratz - Always More (Goshi Goshi Mix)
Giorgio Moroder - What A Night
Yo! Majesty - Don't Let Go (Acapella)
Lily Allen - Not Fair (Kris Di Angelis & Ben Dobie's Circus Mix)
Yes Giantess - You Were Young
Erasure - A Little Respect
Mariah Carey + Jay-Z - Heartbreaker
Yes Giantess - Tuff N Stuff

3 songs for the week

Ellie Goulding - Wish I Stayed (feat. Frankmusik)

"Simple ways getting played"

One of my female tips for 2009, Ellie Goulding has a touching vulnerable voice and great song-writing skills. In this song, her lovely introspective charms are joined together with the electro-pop midas-touch of Frankmusik, one never shy to add a bit of vocoder here and there. The result, marrying folk with electro, is nothing short of brilliant and one of the best songs I've heard in a while.

Giantess - Tuff 'n Stuff

"How do we get high when the sun gets low?"

A few more months and these guys will be everyone's favourite new band. Stick-in-your-head melodies, an absurd amount of involving keyboards and infectious synth-lines, and so much loud energy and intense exuberance that, when getting into the chorus, they have no choice but to slow it down and make a catchy-as-fuck love declaration.

US Royalty - Keep It Cool (Bo Flex Remix)

"Words slipping through my hands"

The original is just an average rock track, but Bo Flex (a.k.a. Ayad Al-Adhamy, a Passion Pit member that also doubles as producer of Giantess) takes it into a whole new level, immersing the melody into layers of icy synths and unashamedly dated keyboards and handclaps, creating a celebratory anthem to shout out loud.
